Spanish Sparkling

Cava, Spain’s best-known sparkling wine, is the country’s answer to Champagne, but is Cava as we know it coming to an end?

In most markets across the world, Cava is more often compared to cheap Prosecco than high-end fizz. Much of the problem comes from the fact that although it’s protected as a Denominación de Origen, Cava can be made in over 20 different regions across Spain, so long as it’s made méthode traditionnelle. You get the good with the not so good, bundled together as equals.

In recent years, the smaller, artisan producers in Penedès broke ties and left the D.O. to bottle their wines under the brand name ‘Corpinnat’. This new name is a ‘seal of excellence’ distinguishing these producers from supermarket-level Cava.

‘Clàssic Penedès’ has also been coined to highlight the fact that the wines labelled this are 100% organic and have been aged for a minimum of 15 months (Reserva quality). And now Rioja, a region we all know and love, has its own classification of quality rosé and white sparkling wines.

At this seated tasting in The Wine Library, we’ll be tasting a range of Spanish sparklers – Cava and beyond.

We make a seating plan for events that are held in The Wine Library. We have both high and low seating options, some more comfy than others, so please inform us if you have any special requirements. Likewise, do tell us if you wish to be sat with someone who has booked separately, we often just have to guess!

Tickets to our tastings are non-refundable. If you can no longer attend, do get in touch as we often keep a cancellations list for those who missed out on tickets. If that’s not the case, we’ll always try and help re-sell them through social media (no guarantees). Alternatively, feel free to pass them to friends or family – we only need the name of the person who booked for entry on the night.
