Sabar Keknyelu Komagas

A unique and refreshing white wine from Hungary. Different and interesting.

Sabar Hill with its 217 meters high altitude, situated near the village of Káptalantóti is one of the smallest of the mountains of Balaton Uplands. However, Sabar is a place with great potential. Sabar winery was founded in 2009, and since then their territories have grown up to seven hectares. The outstanding terroir driven single varietal wines have soon caught the attention of quality oriented wine consumers.

Boasting a diverse range of volcanic sub soils which provides the local soil with potassium and trace elements. This soil helps to create the body, rich acidity, high alcohol and the typical mineral aroma profile of the wines made here.

The name ‘kéknyelű’ means ‘blue stalk’, it refers to the slightly blue tint of the stalks of the plant. Kéknyelű is quite likely of Hungarian origin. Very popular among the winemakers, though it is hard to cultivate. It ripens relatively late therefore it needs protection from animals. Planting alternate rows with a variety such as Budai Zöld encourages more consistent pollination. In good vintages it gives elegant wine with creamy structure and subtle, fine acidity. A rare grape variety that can give exceptionally high-quality wines.

This wine has an amazing character and is deliciously moreish. Full of citrus, florals and nutty flavours the wine has a prominent grapefruit note on the nose. The wine was made through a slow and spontaneous fermentation. Followed by four months of aging in twelve-year-old 300 litre Austrian oak barrels. This helps to round the wine out and give it a delightful complex character that makes it accessible to a multitude of palates.
