Ontañon Vetiver Rioja Blanco

A fantastic Rioja Blanco, full of juicy citrus fruit.

This wine is 100% Viura, a native grape variety from Spain, that produces brilliant golden yellow white wines. On the nose this wine is dominated by a fresh pink grapefruit aroma and a eucalyptus, minty freshness. This refreshing quality carries through onto the palate, that is juicy and energetic and full of citrus fruits and white melon. The finish is long and satisfying, resulting in an ideal wine for a summer's evening or with light seafood dishes or salads.

Bodegas Ontañón is a 5th generation family-owned and run winery in Rioja Baja (now Rioja Oriental). Here Raquel, Rubén and Maria Pérez Cuevas continue their father Gabriel's work to develop Bodegas Ontañón into one of the most highly-regarded wineries in Rioja. Ontañón has vast swathes of vineyard in this part of Rioja.

The family's vineyards sit high in the Sierra Yerga mountains in the prestigious region surrounding Quel, defying misconceptions that Rioja Baja is one of the lesser sub-regions within Rioja. Many of their vineyards are actually planted at altitudes on a par with, or above, those in Rioja Alta and Alavesa; (La Pasada is their highest vineyard at 800m above sea level, planted in 1979 it is used for Reserva and Gran Reserva wines). The hot and dry Mediterranean climate allows for consistent ripening of the grapes with little disease and this has enabled them to pursue organic production across 57 hectares of vines.

Rioja Classification

Rioja Classification

There are four labelling terms that are used to reflect the style and quality of wines throughout Rioja DOCa, reflecting the legal minimum ageing criteria.

Joven/Genérico: Young and fruity, with no minimum ageing requirements, typically released in the year following the vintage. You don’t often see Joven on labels today, simply labelling the wine Rioja is much more commonplace.

Crianza: Must be aged in oak barrels prior to release. Crianza wines have fresh fruit flavours laced with vanilla and hints of spice.

Reserva: Aged for extended periods of time before release, both in oak and in-bottle. Reserva wines are more structured and fuller-bodied. Fresh fruit flavours become cooked and spices become more pronounced.

Gran Reserva: Only made in exceptional years and comprised of grapes from the very best vineyards, Gran Reserva wines are subject to the highest minimum ageing requirements. Elegant and complex, the reds have rich dried fruit flavours and notes of leather.
