Hanewald-Schwerdt Weissburgunder

Fresh and clean, stony German white.

The zest of lemons and limes with nuances of pear, peach, melon and herbs. Silky, lively with fresh acidity.

A partnership between cousins Thomas Hanewald and Stephan Schwerdt, who are members of ‘Generation Riesling’ - a group of the best young winemaking talent in Germany. They focus predominantly on Riesling and Pinot Noir in their Leistadt vineyards, southwest of Frankfurt, however their other wines are not to be ignored.

The family-owned and operated Hanewald-Schwerdt Estate was founded in 1955 in the town of Leistadt. Cousins Thomas Hanewald & Stephan Schwerdt, who are members of ‘Generation Riesling’, a group of the best young winemaking talent in Germany, took over the family buisness in the 2010's, which was established by their grandfather.  The secret of their handcrafted wines is a unique lime-stone reef which dominates all the sites arround Leistadt. A hidden treasure away off the beaten track. The vines are old and surrounded by a protected natural resort in the shade of the Haardt mountains.

Grown on clay-dominated soils, from various vineyards around the town of Bad Dürkheim. After hand-picking and pressing, they encourage some skin contact before fermentation takes place in a combination of old oak barrels and stainless steel, resting on the lees until bottling.

The Grape - Pinot Blanc

The Grape - Pinot Blanc

Originating in Burgundy, Pinot Blanc is the white-berried mutation of Pinot Gris, itself a mutation of Pinot Noir. For many years it was mistaken for Chardonnay due to its full body and light flavour.

Best known for its plantings in the Alsace region of France, you'll also find Pinot Blanc in Germany (Weissburgunder), Northern Italy and California.

Pinot Blanc generally makes dry, medium to full bodied wines with apple, peach and pear flavours, plenty of lemon acidity and a backbone of minerality. These wines are typically produced with youthful consumption in mind and are often vinified without oak contact.
