Blackbook 'Nightjar' Pinot Noir

Outstanding Pinot Noir, that happens to come from Essex.

Blackbook Winery is situated at the end of a row of railway arches in Battersea. Brought up in the USA, Sergio was a sommelier in a previous life, moving to London to work in some of the city's top Michelin starred restaurants before making the switch and and studying winemaking at Plumpton College in Sussex. After travelling around the world developing his skills, he settled in south London with wife Lynsey and their two children, installing this most unique of wineries and in our opinion, making some of the UK's most exciting still wines.

This is without doubt one of the most exciting English still wines we've ever tried. The quest to make quality red wines in England has troubled the best of winemakers; our climate is, or has been for the most part, intrinsically unfit for purpose. But through a combination of climate change and meticulous site selection, the warmest microclimates of the south of England are now producing fruit that can truly world class Pinot Noir. But more importantly, wines that taste uniquely English.

Blackbook Winery

Blackbook Winery

Blackbook was born of a love of three things: cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; the English wine industry; and the country's capital, London.

Blackbook is the first solo project from winemaker Sergio Verrillo and his wife Lynsey. Whilst Sergio grew up in the US, they both consider themselves passionate Londoners who have long held the dream of starting an urban winery in the city. They've acheived this dream with their spot under a railway arch in Battersea, South London.

Grapes are sourced from growers within hours of the city, carefully selected for their well-located vineyards and high quality fruit. They endeavour to bring the hard work of the vineyard owners to the forefront by creating a range of single vineyard wines that showcase the quality and potential for making world-leading still wine here in England.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a red grape variety and a style of red wine that is typically light to medium-bodied, fruit-forward, and relatively low alcohol compared to other red wines. With its higher acidity and lower tannin, Pinot Noirs are very versatile when it comes to food pairing. The red grapes can also be used to make white, rosé and sparkling wine (Blanc de Noirs).

Originally from Burgundy, the thin-skinned Pinot Noir grape is notoriously hard to grow, demanding optimum growing conditions and favouring cooler, coastal climates.

While many experts still consider the best Pinots to come from Burgundy, it is grown in regions around the world, including Oregon, California, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy. The wine's diverse geographical range means that you might also find it labelled as Red Burgundy, Pinot Nero, Blauburgunder, or Spätburgunder.
