Benevento Montecalvo Falanghina

Falanghina from its heartland in Benevento.

Montecalvo is a large cooperative of around 1000 members, founded in 1960. Its 1800 hectares of vineyards are cultivated mainly with Falanghina, but also Aglianico, Greco and Fiano, on soils ranging from alluvial to volcanic.

The Falanghina vines are Guyot-trained and grow in limestone and clay soils at 300-400 metres altitude. Harvested in the last half of September, they are gently pressed and fermented in steel for 10 days at controlled temperatures, with no malolactic fermentation.

The wine has delicate tropical aromas with citrus fruit and honeysuckle. Ripe lemon and apple flavours come though on the palate, alongside hints of pineapple and candied peel, with white spice on the finish.

Fresh and juicy with appealing minerality, it’s best served with something hearty like an Aubergine Parmigiana, or something fresher like a Caprese salad with Buffalo Mozzarella.
