Baglio Gibellina U Passimiento

A gorgeous wine!

Baglio Gibellina U Passimiento is a bright intense red wine with red fruit flavours at the forefront. The palate demonstrates plums, red cherries and raisins and is full bodied with a lovely warmth to it. This is balanced by an energetic acidty and well-rounded tannins.

U Passimiento is made partially in the 'Passito' style of Amarone della Valpoliciella by drying out the grapes to concentrate the flavours. This blend is a mix of fresh Frappato and dried Nero d'Avola grapes.

U Passimiento from Sicily is made from their own Nero d’Avola and Frappatto grapes grown at Baglio Gibellina which is situated in picturesque Sicily where its vineyards are surrounded by the hills of Salemi and Santa Ninfa. The landscape is dotted with vineyards, olive groves, citrus trees, juniper trees and fichi d’India trees. Old vineyards located between 300-600m above sea level are grown on a mixture of clay and volcanic soils with limited yields allowing to produce outstanding wines.

The Frappato grapes are harvested as soon as they reach maturation, and so that all the typical freshness remains in the must is fermented slowly in small steel tanks. The Nero d’Avola grapes are left on the vines for a light withering and for natural dehydration to occur. They are late harvested and with extreme care placed in wooden cases. The natural sweetness of the wines is obtained by interrupting the fermentation through the cold process. The wine is then matured for some months in steel tanks.

What is organic wine?

What is organic wine?

Organic wine is wine made from grapes grown in accordance with the principles of organic farming. This excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.

Previously, “Made with Organically Grown Grapes” was legally the only claim possible, but regulations introduced in 2012 now allow the whole winemaking process, from harvest to bottle, to be certified by law.

The definition does still vary from country to country though. In the US, no additional sulfites may be added to any organic product, including wine. In the EU, added sulfites are allowed, though there are limits on how much. Most other wine-producing countries do not have their own standards for organic wine and observe the standards of the nation importing the wine.

Frappato

Frappato

Frappato is an Italian grape variety known for producing light bodied reds. Planted primarily in Sicily, it’s often used in big blends alongside Nero d’Avola or Nerello Mascalese, however now Frappato is beginning to make more of an appearance as a single varietal superstar.

Fresh and juicy, you’ll find aromas and flavours of red berries (strawberry, cranberry) and roses, with subtle spicy nuances.

Typically medium in acidity, light in colour, and low in tannins, the youthful style of Frappato makes it an extremely versatile wine. It’s a fish-friendly red (ideal with tuna or swordfish), a great partner to pizza or pasta, and you can serve it chilled during the summer months.
