This country hasn't always been drinking the best that German wine had to offer, but then nor was Germany exporting a great deal of it. 'Hock', 'Liebfraumilch' and a certain blue member of the convent weren't exactly gastronomic experiences, but did end up as gateway wines for a whole generation of wine drinkers.
