Like all good stories, that of Boutinot France is both long and a little bit complicated! Boutinot began as a tiny importer in 1980, specialising in French wines. Paul Boutinot himself began by personally selecting the wines from France, back in the UK he would unload the trailer by hand, and deliver the crates of wines to customers himself. But good things grow and by the end of the decade we had become a bigger and better company. A company that not only sought out great wines but made them too. Ten years later, Boutinot France was founded in January 1990.

Today, Boutinot’s French office is located in Mâcon, and has over 20 employees who take care of production across the whole of France, covering fresh whites and rosés from Gascony, mineral wines from Burgundy, and joyful varietal wines from Languedoc among others. We don’t use any single model to source our wines; instead, a combination of sources are used, from large-scale, high-quality co-ops to small, family growers and single domaines, as well as our own vineyards in Cairanne. Drawing on the expertise of our winemakers and a network of partner growers, we seek to deliver the highest quality-to-price ratio possible for every wine.

Freed from the shackles of appellation and tradition, Boutinot's Uva Non Grata range celebrates the overlooked and the underappreciated. Each of these wines carries a defiantly individual artistic representation of its raison d’être.

Vin de France is not a single geographical wine region, but rather a national classification introduced in 2010 for wines that fall outside France’s stricter AOC or IGP rules. This flexible category allows winemakers to source grapes from anywhere in the country, encouraging creativity and innovation. As a result, Vin de France wines reflect the full diversity of France’s climates — from the cool, maritime Atlantic coasts to the sun-drenched Mediterranean and the continental interiors.

The category permits both indigenous and international grape varieties and wine styles are equally broad. Essentially, Vin de France offers winemakers freedom and consumers approachable wines that express both French heritage and modern winemaking vision.

Gamay is a red grape variety best known for producing the wines of Beaujolais in eastern France. It originated in the Burgundy region and was first mentioned in the 14th century. Though once banned from prestigious Burgundian vineyards, Gamay found its true home in the granite-rich soils of Beaujolais, where it thrives.

Viticulturally, Gamay is an early-ripening variety that performs best in well-drained, acidic soils, particularly granite and schist. It is relatively vigorous and productive, making canopy management important to maintain quality. The grape is sensitive to site, with higher-elevation and cooler locations producing more structured, complex wines.

While France remains its heartland—particularly the ten Beaujolais Crus like Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent—Gamay is also grown in Canada, the United States (notably Oregon and California), Switzerland, and New Zealand.

Gamay is probably most famous for Beaujolais Nouveau, a light, fruity wine made via carbonic maceration, released just weeks after harvest and best served chilled. However, more serious styles from the Cru villages offer greater depth, structure, and ageing potential.

Flavour-wise, Gamay typically shows vibrant red fruit such as cherry, raspberry, and cranberry, often with floral notes, earthy undertones, and a touch of spice. Naturally high acidity and low tannins make it fresh, food-friendly, and highly drinkable.
