Cantina Tramin was founded in 1898 and has 310 member winegrowers who follow its strict directives on the cultivation of the vines. The vineyards are an integral part of the enchanting and picturesque landscape of the Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy and cover 260 hectares situated on the sunny slopes of the region at altitudes ranging from 250 to 850 metres above sea level. In 2011, Cantina Tramin gained the "Double Stella" award - an extraordinary achievement, which is given to a winery for being awarded the prestigious "3 Bicchieri" 20 times by Gambero Rosso.

Alto Adige, also known as Südtirol, is a picturesque wine region in northern Italy, nestled in the foothills of the Alps and bordering Austria and Switzerland. Though one of Italy’s smallest wine-producing areas, it is renowned for its high-quality, characterful wines and striking Alpine landscapes. Pinot Grigio is the most widely planted varietal, followed closely by Gewürztraminer, particularly around the village of Tramin, from which it takes its name. Other important grapes include Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, Schiava (a light, local red), and Lagrein (a darker, more robust indigenous red). International varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also thrive.

Viticulture in Alto Adige is labour-intensive due to the mountainous terrain, but the rewards are evident in the purity, freshness, and elegance of its wines. The region leads Italy in sustainable and high-altitude wine production.

Gewürztraminer is a distinctive and aromatic white grape variety, best known for its intensely perfumed character and exotic flavour profile. Thought to have originated in the Alto Adige region of northern Italy or possibly Germany, its name means "spiced Traminer," reflecting its aromatic nature and link to the ancient Traminer variety.

Viticulturally, Gewürztraminer is a challenging grape to grow. It buds early and ripens quickly, making it vulnerable to spring frost and overly warm climates. It prefers cool to moderate growing conditions where acidity can be preserved, which balances its naturally high sugar content and potential for richness.

The variety thrives in Alsace, France, where it produces powerful, dry to off-dry wines with high alcohol and intense aromas of lychee, rose petals, tropical fruit, ginger, and spice. It’s also grown in Germany, Austria, northern Italy, New Zealand, the USA (particularly Oregon and California), and cooler parts of Australia and Canada.

Gewürztraminer wines range from dry and aromatic to luscious late-harvest and botrytised styles. They are often full-bodied with low to moderate acidity, making them ideal for pairing with spicy Asian cuisine, rich cheeses, or pâté. Its unmistakable perfume and bold flavours make Gewürztraminer one of the most recognisable and unique white wine varieties in the world.
