Sugrue South Downs is an acclaimed English sparkling wine producer founded by winemaker Dermot Sugrue, originally trained in environmental sciences and viticulture before working in Champagne and at major English estates such as Nyetimber.

His own project focuses on crafting wines that express chalk terroir in southern England, drawing on his deep knowledge of classic méthode traditionnelle techniques.

The South Downs region, encompassing West Sussex, Hampshire and East Sussex, features chalk and greensand soils similar to Champagne’s Côte des Blancs, ideal for Chardonnay that combines crisp acidity with minerality.

Sugrue’s flagship wines — including Cuvée Boz (named after his brother), The Trouble with Dreams and Zodo — are made in small quantities with meticulous cellar work, long lees ageing and a focus on purity of fruit and place.

The South Downs is one of England’s most important and exciting wine regions, stretching across West Sussex, East Sussex and parts of Hampshire. Its defining feature is a long band of chalk and greensand soils, geologically linked to Champagne, which provides excellent drainage and contributes a distinctive mineral character to the wines.

The region benefits from a cool maritime climate, with long daylight hours, gentle breezes and moderated temperatures that help grapes retain high natural acidity. These conditions are ideal for sparkling wine production, particularly from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and the South Downs has become a focal point for premium English fizz.

Still wines are also gaining recognition, especially refined whites and lighter reds. Producers here focus on precision, terroir expression and long lees ageing, helping to establish the South Downs as a benchmark region for quality English wine.

Chardonnay is one of the world’s most popular and versatile white grape varieties, originating from the Burgundy region of France.
