Soalheiro is a leading family‑run producer in Vinho Verde in Portugal’s far‑north Minho.

Founded in the 1970s and releasing its first Alvarinho in 1982, the estate helped put high‑quality, single‑varietal Alvarinho – and serious, age-worthy Vinho Verde – on the map.

The climate is cool and wet, with granitic soils and sheltered, south‑facing slopes that allow slow ripening and pronounced natural acidity.

Soalheiro farms organically, with strong experimentation in natural and low‑sulphur wines, and has become a reference for terroir‑driven whites.

The range includes Alvarinho Clássico, Primeiras Vinhas, Granit, Reserva, ALLO (Alvarinho‑Loureiro), 9% low‑alcohol Alvarinho, Pet‑Nat, Mineral Rosé, Oppaco red (with Pinot Noir, Vinhão and Alvarinho), varietal Sauvignon Blanc & Alvarinho, and several sparkling Alvarinho cuvées.

The Minho wine region, located in the verdant northwest of Portugal, is best known as the home of Vinho Verde – the country’s famous light, fresh, and often slightly spritzy white wine. Bordering Spain’s Galicia region, Minho benefits from a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate, with high rainfall and mild temperatures that support lush vegetation and a long growing season.

This maritime climate, while beneficial for retaining acidity and producing aromatic wines, also presents viticultural challenges such as fungal diseases and uneven ripening, making vineyard management essential. Traditional pergola training systems have historically been used to combat humidity, though modern trellising is increasingly common.

Minho comprises nine sub-regions, including Monção e Melgaço, which is particularly noted for high-quality Alvarinho (Albariño), producing wines with greater structure and ageing potential. Other key sub-regions include Lima, Cávado, and Basto.

The region’s most important grape varieties are white, with Alvarinho and Loureiro leading the way. Trajadura, Arinto, Avesso, and Azal are also widely planted, often blended to create the signature style of Vinho Verde – light-bodied, zesty, and low in alcohol. Red grapes such as Vinhão and Espadeiro are also grown, producing deeply coloured, rustic wines, though they are less commonly exported.

Loureiro is a white grape variety native to north-western Iberia, primarily associated with Portugal’s Vinho Verde region and the Rías Baixas appellation of Galicia in Spain. Its name means “laurel” in Portuguese, a nod to the bay-leaf and aromatic herbal notes often found in its wines. Believed to have originated in the Lima Valley, Loureiro thrives in the cool, damp Atlantic climate, where its naturally high acidity and aromatic expression are best preserved.

Viticulturally, Loureiro is a relatively vigorous and productive vine, favouring fertile alluvial soils and requiring careful canopy management to balance ripeness with acidity. It buds and ripens late, making it well suited to maritime conditions where cooler summers extend the growing season.

Today, Loureiro is planted predominantly in northern Portugal, especially in the sub-regions of Lima, Cávado and Ave, and across the border in Galicia. Plantings outside the Iberian Peninsula are limited but growing interest has seen experimental vineyards established in cooler-climate regions further afield.

In terms of style, Loureiro is most often produced as a varietal wine or blended with Alvarinho and Trajadura in Vinho Verde. Wines are typically light to medium-bodied, highly aromatic and refreshing, displaying citrus, peach, green apple, floral and laurel-like herbal notes, with crisp acidity and mineral tension.
