Palliser Estate’s story is rooted in people and place: a Martinborough winery where careful land stewardship shapes wines of precision and poise. Named in honour of Cape Palliser, the estate channels the region’s pioneering spirit into a modern, premium New Zealand brand whose wines speak clearly of origin and craft.

Vineyards were first planted in 1984, with the inaugural harvest in 1989. Today, Palliser farms around 92 hectares across Martinborough, including 85 hectares classified as ultra-premium. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir lead the portfolio, supported by Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris. The aim is consistent—bottle the character of the district through thoughtful farming and exacting cellar work—an approach validated by a long list of awards.

While the estate has never pursued a single flagship variety, its Sauvignon Blanc has set a notable benchmark for clarity and drive. Martinborough anchors the Wairarapa’s fine-wine triangle, sitting on ancient alluvial river terraces carved by the Ruamahanga beneath the shelter of the Tararua Range. Free-draining gravels with shallow silt-loams force vines to dig deep, while a cool, dry, semi-maritime climate brings brisk winds, frequent spring frosts and low rainfall (around 700 mm), preserving acidity and concentrating flavour. The result is naturally small berries, modest yields and long hang-time—ideal for site-transparent wines.

Pinot Noir is the calling card, planted widely on the Martinborough Terrace and neighbouring Te Muna Road, with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc close behind; Pinot Gris, Riesling and a little Syrah round out the palette.
