L'Archetipo is a family-run estate in Castellaneta, Puglia, founded by farmer and agronomist Francesco Valentino Dibenedetto.

Francesco began converting the estate to organic farming in the 1980s, moved to biodynamic farming in 2000, and subsequently developed his own approach of Agricoltura Sinergica, inspired by Rudolf Steiner and Masanobu Fukuoka.

The vineyards are farmed without synthetic chemicals or ploughing, with the aim of encouraging a living, self-sustaining ecosystem.

The family now works together across the vineyards and their tufa-built cellar, championing both classic and lesser-known Puglian varieties.

Puglia, located in the heel of Italy’s boot, is one of the country’s most prolific wine-producing regions. Known for its sun-drenched landscapes and ancient viticultural heritage, Puglia has traditionally focused on quantity, though quality has increased significantly in recent decades.

The region experiences a hot, dry Mediterranean climate, with long summers and minimal rainfall – ideal for ripening grapes to full maturity. Coastal breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian Seas help moderate the heat, while the inland areas experience more extreme temperatures. Drought can be a challenge, but the region's native grape varieties are well-adapted to these conditions.

Puglia is divided into several key wine areas, including Salento in the south, known for robust reds, and Castel del Monte in the north, which has seen growing recognition for its quality wines.

The region is best known for red grape varieties. Primitivo, genetically linked to Zinfandel, produces bold, fruit-forward wines with high alcohol. Negroamaro is another key variety, offering darker, earthier reds, often used in blends. Nero di Troia and Malvasia Nera also feature prominently. While reds dominate, white grapes like Verdeca, Bombino Bianco, and Fiano are increasingly being cultivated.

Puglia continues to grow in popularity for offering expressive, approachable wines with a strong sense of place and great value.

Moscatello Selvatico is a rare, traditional Puglian white grape from the wider Moscato family, historically associated particularly with northern Bari and the surrounding areas of Puglia.

DNA research has shown it to be directly related to Moscato di Alessandria, or Zibibbo. The variety has been cultivated in Puglia for centuries and was traditionally used both as a table grape and for making fragrant wines.

Its naturally aromatic character is unmistakably Muscat-like, with floral and grapey notes alongside delicate citrus and ripe fruit.

Moscatello Selvatico typically produces wines with moderate alcohol, refreshing acidity and a gently sweet, harmonious character.

Although naturally suited to sweet wines, it can also be used for sparkling wines and base wines.

Today, it remains relatively uncommon, making it an intriguing example of Puglia’s rich and often overlooked indigenous grape heritage.
