Ktima Apostolidi was founded when Efthymios Apostolidis planted his first vineyard in Dialekto, Kavala in North Macedonaia in 1958. Today the estate covers about 16 hectares and is run by the third generation. The estate farms biodynamically, embraces low‑intervention winemaking and focuses on native Greek varieties such as Vidiano, Assyrtiko and Karapapas, showcasing regional identity and terroir.

Kavala, located in the northern part of Greek Macedonia along the Aegean coast, is a region of remarkable diversity and potential for viticulture. The area combines the cooling influence of the Aegean Sea with the sheltered, sun-drenched slopes of the Rhodope foothills, creating a climate that balances warmth for full grape ripening with cool night-time temperatures to preserve natural acidity and aromatic complexity. The region experiences hot, dry summers and mild winters, ensuring optimal vine dormancy and fruit maturation.

Kavala is particularly well-suited to indigenous Greek varieties such as Vidiano, Assyrtiko, and Roditis, which thrive alongside international grapes like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. Many wineries in the region embrace organic and biodynamic practices, as well as minimal-intervention winemaking, allowing the terroir to express itself naturally in the finished wines. The result is a range of wines with bright aromatics, vibrant acidity, and mineral depth, perfectly reflecting the harmony of sea, soil, and elevation that defines Kavala’s emerging reputation as a unique and expressive winemaking region.

Vidiano is an ancient white grape variety native to Crete, Greece, and is considered one of the island’s most promising and distinctive indigenous grapes. Once nearly extinct, it has been revived by a new generation of Cretan winemakers who recognise its potential for high-quality, expressive wines.

Viticulturally, Vidiano is a relatively low-yielding, early-ripening variety that thrives in Crete’s Mediterranean climate. It prefers limestone and schist soils, often found on the island’s hillsides. The grape is resistant to drought and disease, making it well-suited to sustainable and organic farming practices.

Vidiano is primarily planted in Crete, particularly around Rethymno and Heraklion, but its reputation is slowly growing, with small experimental plantings appearing in other parts of Greece. However, it remains largely unique to the island.

Wines made from Vidiano are typically dry and medium- to full-bodied, with a balance of vibrant acidity and ripe fruit. The variety offers an aromatic profile that can include peach, apricot, citrus, herbs, and floral notes, often with a subtle mineral or saline character. It responds well to both stainless steel and barrel fermentation, allowing for both fresh, crisp styles and richer, more textured expressions. Vidiano is increasingly viewed as a flagship grape for modern Cretan wine.
