Made in tiny quantities, Richard Kershaw MW's wines are always in high demand. Born in Sheffield, Richard trained and worked as a chef before discovering wine. After extensive travelling he settled in South Africa in 1999, and by 2009 he was Group Winemaker at Mulderbosch and Kanu.

He established Kershaw Wines in 2012, specialising in the cool-climate wines of Elgin. Being one of the few MW’s to make his own wine, he uses his vast knowledge to craft stunning wines that are easily a match for some of the world’s very best wines.

The G.P.S. (Grape Positioning System) series is made from exciting small parcels of fruit selected from carefully chosen vineyards outside the Elgin Valley. This Pinot Noir comes from two small parcels grown in a protected lee of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, a cool climate area renowned for Pinot Noir. Bordered by the Babylonstoren Mountains to the north and the Kleinrivier Mountains to the south, clouds are trapped by the surrounding mountains, retaining cool air and moisture into the valley. The area is also influenced by the Antarctic Benguela current from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings cooling breezes, resulting in cool average summer temperatures. The long hang time builds complex characters with balancing acidity.

The vines are French clone PN777 & PN115 which are trellised with an open canopy to maximise sunlight and aid air circulation. The Bokkeveld Shale soils provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to grow deep, strong root systems. The grapes are hand-picked and manually sorted.

Walker Bay is a cool‑climate wine region on South Africa’s southern coast, centred around the seaside town of Hermanus in the Overberg (Western Cape). Kept cool by the Antarctic-sourced Benguela Current, it benefits from maritime breezes and a long, moderated growing season that helps preserve acidity and refine fruit expression.

Walker Bay includes sub-regions such as Hemel‑en‑Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel‑en‑Aarde and Hemel‑en‑Aarde Ridge, situated between about 200 and 400 metres above sea level. These wards produce wines of finesse and balance, with soils ranging from shale and sandstone to granite and clay-rich loam.

The region is especially celebrated for Burgundian varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shine here, delivering elegant, mineral‑tinged wines with vibrant acidity and structural polish Sauvignon Blanc is also widely planted, offering crisp citrus and flinty character, alongside smaller plantings of Syrah, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.

Walker Bay’s wines typically display pure red fruit (in Pinot Noir), a savoury‑saline element unique to its coastal terroir, and clarity of expression. Premium producers such as Hamilton Russell, Creation and Ataraxia are noted for site‑specific, artisanal wines that reflect the region’s precision and cool‑climate pedigree.

Walker Bay continues to gain acclaim for its cool‑climate elegance and distinctive coastal freshness, making it one of South Africa’s most exciting emerging regions.

Pinot Noir is one of the world’s most celebrated and challenging grape varieties, renowned for producing elegant, complex wines. Believed to have originated in Burgundy, France, over 1,000 years ago, it thrives in cooler climates where its thin skin and early ripening nature are best suited. Viticulturally, Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to grow: it is susceptible to rot, mildew, and pests, and requires precise canopy management to balance ripening with acidity retention.

Pinot Noir is planted across the globe, with notable expressions found in Burgundy, Champagne, Oregon’s Willamette Valley, California’s Sonoma Coast, New Zealand’s Central Otago, and Germany’s Baden and Pfalz regions. In Champagne, it is a key component of sparkling wines, typically blended with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The wine's diverse geographical range means that you might also find it labelled as Red Burgundy, Pinot Nero, Blauburgunder, or Spätburgunder.

The grape produces wines of delicate colour but remarkable aromatic depth. Typical flavour profiles include red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, often layered with floral notes, earthy undertones, and hints of spice or forest floor as the wines mature. Styles range from light and silky to more structured and age-worthy, depending on climate and winemaking choices. Pinot Noir’s ability to express terroir with precision makes it a favourite among wine lovers, despite — or perhaps because of — its demanding nature in the vineyard.
