Josef Bründlmayer started this domaine in 1980 with a focus on individual parcels. Acquisitions and replantings resulted in a total of 18 hectares spread across an astonishing 52 different parcels, each of which is vinified separately. The plantings are predominantly Grüner Veltliner, but there are some special plots of Riesling, too. In 2015 Josef’s son, Philipp, took the reigns and with very much the same philosophy of encouraging the vineyards to speak. Stainless steel is the order of the day, as Philipp likes to accentuate the vibrancy and energy of the wines. Purity and minerality shine through each of the wines, and their crystalline saltiness is very much in keeping with the wines we like to buy.

The Kremstal wine region, located along the Danube in Lower Austria, is one of the country’s most exciting and diverse viticultural areas. It benefits from a unique climate shaped by the meeting of warm Pannonian influences from the east and cooler breezes from the Waldviertel to the north. This interplay creates ideal conditions for producing wines with both ripeness and freshness.

Soils vary considerably, ranging from primary rock in the higher, terraced sites to loess and gravel closer to the river. These distinct terroirs allow for a wide spectrum of wine styles. Grüner Veltliner is the signature grape, thriving on loess soils where it develops generous fruit, peppery spice and vibrant acidity. Riesling excels on the stonier slopes, yielding wines of precision, minerality and great ageing potential.

Kremstal also cultivates red varieties, including Zweigelt and Pinot Noir, which benefit from the warmer microclimates in the valley. The wines of Kremstal display remarkable diversity: from crisp, aromatic whites with citrus and stone fruit notes, to fuller-bodied styles with herbal nuances, and elegant reds with bright berry fruit. The region’s balance of tradition and innovation ensures wines of character, finesse and excellent value, reflecting both the landscape and Austria’s modern wine identity.

Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s flagship white grape variety, prized for its versatility, vibrant acidity, and distinctive flavour profile. Thought to have originated in Austria, it thrives particularly well in regions like Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal, where it benefits from a continental climate with warm days and cool nights, ideal for preserving acidity and aromatic freshness.

Viticulturally, Grüner Veltliner is a mid-ripening grape that performs well on a variety of soils, especially loess and primary rock. It tends to yield generously but requires careful vineyard management to achieve concentration and balance.

Outside Austria, it has found success in countries like Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and increasingly in New World regions such as New Zealand, Australia, and the United States—particularly in cooler sites like Oregon and California’s Sonoma Coast.

Grüner Veltliner is known for its food-friendly character and diverse styles. Young, fresh expressions display crisp acidity and flavours of green apple, lime, white pepper, and radish. More serious, age-worthy versions—often from top single vineyards—can be richer and more textured, showing stone fruit, spice, and a distinctive minerality.

Whether light and zesty or complex and structured, Grüner Veltliner offers a uniquely expressive white wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of cuisines.
