One of the main protagonists in the renaissance of Southern Italian wines, Feudi di San Gregorio had carved out a reputation for making truly world-class wines in less than 30 years.

The company began in the mid-1980s with the aim of safeguarding local traditions and unlocking the potential of key indigenous grapes such as Fiano, Greco, Falanghina and Aglianico. In 2021, Feudi di San Gregorio received the B Corporation (B Corp) certification, rewarding companies whose aim is to be a positive and regenerative force for the environment and the community. The same year, Feudi was also awarded the Equalitas certification which officially recognises social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainability, through biodiversity, carbon and water footprint and ecological cultivation practices.

As a multi award-winning producer for its outstanding wines, Feudi di San Gregorio also features in the 2021 Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries and in 2024 Feudi was awarded The Old Vine Hero Award for Research on ‘The Patriarchs’, a study and catalogue of century-old Aglianico vines from Taurasi.

Campania, located in southern Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast, is a region rich in history, volcanic soils, and native grape varieties. Its winemaking heritage dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times, and today it is renowned for producing distinctive, characterful wines from both white and red indigenous grapes.

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Coastal breezes help to moderate temperatures, while the presence of volcanic soils—particularly around Mount Vesuvius—adds complexity and minerality to the wines. Inland, higher elevations provide cooler growing conditions, ideal for preserving acidity and aromatic finesse.

Campania’s key wine-producing areas include Avellino, Benevento, and the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Notable DOCGs such as Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, and Taurasi are recognised for their quality and ageing potential.

Prominent white grapes include Fiano, known for its floral and hazelnut notes; Greco, offering citrus and mineral tones; and Falanghina, with crisp acidity and orchard fruit character. Among reds, Aglianico is the standout variety, producing powerful, age-worthy wines—most famously in Taurasi, often referred to as the “Barolo of the South.”

Fiano is an ancient white grape variety originating in southern Italy, most famously associated with the Campania region, particularly the DOCG of Fiano di Avellino. Believed to have been cultivated since Roman times, Fiano thrives in the volcanic soils and warm Mediterranean climate of southern Italy, where it produces naturally low yields and small, thick-skinned berries. This combination results in concentrated flavours and a distinctive texture.

Viticulturally, Fiano is relatively hardy, with good resistance to disease, though its small bunches can make it less commercially productive. It ripens relatively late, maintaining acidity well even in hot conditions, which contributes to its ability to age gracefully.

While Campania remains the heartland, plantings have expanded to other Italian regions such as Sicily and Puglia. In recent decades, Australia—especially McLaren Vale and the Riverland—has embraced Fiano for its drought tolerance and suitability to warm climates. Small plantings can also be found in the United States and South America.

Fiano wines are typically medium- to full-bodied, with aromas of pear, melon, and citrus, often layered with hazelnut, honey, and floral notes. Texture is a hallmark, giving the wine weight and creaminess. Styles range from fresh, unoaked expressions to richer, barrel-aged versions capable of developing complexity with bottle age.
