Envínate is a collaborative wine project founded by four friends — Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos and José Ángel Martínez — who met while studying oenology in Alicante.

Their philosophy is centred on expressing individual vineyards and the character of Spain's Atlantic-influenced regions, with Tenerife becoming one of their most celebrated areas.

Benje comes from old Listán Blanco vines around Santiago del Teide, growing at high altitude in poor volcanic soils.

The vineyards are farmed traditionally, largely by hand, with no chemical treatments.

The wine spends time on its lees before bottling, helping build texture while retaining its natural freshness. The result is a highly individual expression of Tenerife's volcanic landscape and Atlantic climate.

Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, has one of the most distinctive wine landscapes in Europe. Vineyards are spread across dramatic volcanic terrain, from coastal slopes to sites well above 1,000 metres, with Mount Teide dominating the island’s geography. The combination of altitude, volcanic soils and Atlantic influence creates a remarkable range of microclimates.

The climate is subtropical but strongly moderated by the ocean and the cooling north-easterly trade winds. Northern areas are generally cooler, cloudier and more humid, while the south is warmer and drier. Altitude plays a major role, with higher vineyards benefiting from significant diurnal temperature variation that helps preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Key challenges include drought, strong winds, erosion and, in more humid northern zones, fungal disease pressure.

Tenerife’s soils are entirely volcanic in origin, ranging from black basalt and ash to pumice and decomposed lava. They are typically low in organic matter and highly free-draining. One of the island’s most important viticultural advantages is that phylloxera never became established, meaning many vineyards remain planted on their own roots, often with exceptionally old vines.

The island is home to a wealth of indigenous varieties. Listán Blanco (Palomino) is the principal white grape, producing fresh, saline wines with citrus and smoky mineral notes. Other important whites include Malvasía Aromática, Marmajuelo, Gual and Vijariego Blanco. Red varieties include Listán Negro, Negramoll, Baboso Negro and Tintilla, giving wines with red fruit, herbs, pepper and volcanic savouriness.

Tenerife contains five principal DOs: Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de la Orotava, Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Abona and Valle de Güímar. Styles range from crisp, mineral whites and light, aromatic reds to richer volcanic wines and sweet Malvasía.

Leading producers include Envínate, Suertes del Marqués, Borja Pérez, Viñátigo and Tajinaste, all of whom have helped bring international attention to Tenerife’s old vines, indigenous grapes and highly individual terroirs.

Listán Blanco is the Canary Islands’ local name for Palomino Fino, the grape best known for producing Sherry in Jerez. While Palomino can be relatively neutral and low in acidity on mainland Spain, the volcanic soils, altitude and Atlantic influence of the Canaries can give Listán Blanco considerably more freshness, texture and aromatic character.

The variety is vigorous and productive, with relatively large bunches and berries. It is well adapted to warm, dry climates and generally ripens reliably, although naturally modest acidity means cooler sites, altitude and early harvesting can be important for retaining freshness. Across Tenerife and the other Canary Islands, Listán Blanco is frequently found in very old vineyards, often planted on volcanic soils and traditionally trained in distinctive local systems. The islands’ isolation also means many vineyards remain planted on their own roots rather than being grafted onto American rootstocks.

In the glass, Listán Blanco tends towards a restrained rather than overtly aromatic style. Typical flavours include lemon peel, green and yellow apple, pear and white peach, alongside dried herbs, fennel, chamomile and subtle floral notes. Volcanic sites can produce wines with pronounced smoky, saline and stony characters, while riper examples may show apricot or tropical fruit.

The best examples combine moderate alcohol with refreshing acidity, savoury complexity and a distinctive mineral, saline finish.
