The Bott-Geyl estate was founded by two families in the heart of Alsace. The Bott’s had cultivated vines since the 19th Century in Ribeauville. The Geyl’s were just a short distance away in Beblenheim, and they had been producing wine since the end of the 18th Century. In 1926, Andree Geyl and Frederic Paul Bott married, forming Domaine Bott Geyl.

Over many years, they expanded their production, from 4 to 14 hectares over 40 years. By 1993, they had explored some of the world’s most renowned winemaking regions, using the knowledge they acquired to improve their technologies and ultimately the quality of the wine. Today the estate covers 18 hectares, including 6 Grands Crus, 3 lieux-dits, and 1 historic Clos, Le Clos des 3 Chemins.

Their estate operates under biodynamic and organic practices, as they keep the sustainability and preservation of the vineyard at the forefront of their operations. They also use minimal intervention in their winemaking, allowing nature to take its course and allowing the wine to reflect terroir and vintage. The results are wines which overtly show complexity, intensity and a distinctive style.

Alsace, located in northeastern France along the German border, is a unique wine region renowned for its aromatic white wines and strong sense of terroir. Sheltered by the Vosges Mountains, Alsace enjoys a semi-continental climate with low rainfall and abundant sunshine—ideal for slow grape ripening and concentrated flavours.

The region's complex geology features a mosaic of soil types, including limestone, granite, clay, and volcanic soils. This diversity allows for nuanced expressions of grape varieties and distinct vineyard identities.

Alsace specialises in white wines, particularly from noble varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. These grapes produce wines that are typically dry, although late-harvest styles like Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles offer luscious sweetness with remarkable ageing potential. Flavours range from citrus, green apple, and stone fruit in Riesling, to exotic spice, lychee, and rose in Gewurztraminer, and rich, smoky notes in Pinot Gris.

Wines are mostly varietally labelled and bottled in the region’s distinctive tall, flute-shaped bottles.

Pinot Gris is a white grape variety originating from France, where it is most famously grown in Alsace. It is a mutation of Pinot Noir and is also known internationally as Pinot Grigio in Italy, where it is typically made in a lighter, crisper style. Despite its name, the grape has a pinkish-grey skin, which can give wines a slightly golden hue.

Pinot Gris is now grown in many cool to moderate climate regions across the world, including New Zealand, Germany (as Grauburgunder), Oregon, Australia, and increasingly in the UK. The style varies widely depending on the region and winemaking approach - from dry and zesty to rich, off-dry or even late-harvest expressions.

Aromatically, Pinot Gris tends to show notes of pear, apple, peach, and citrus, with hints of honeysuckle, spice, and sometimes a touch of smoke or nuttiness. In Alsace, it can produce full-bodied wines with texture and ageing potential, while Italian Pinot Grigio is typically light and fresh.

Viticulturally, Pinot Gris is an early-ripening variety, but it can be sensitive to disease and rot due to its thin skins and compact bunches. It requires careful canopy management and monitoring to maintain acidity and avoid over-ripeness, particularly in warmer climates.
