Daschbosch crafts elegant wines and experimental wines whilst upholding traditional methods of wine-making and craftsmanship, since 1754, when the farm land was granted by the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, Rijk Tulbagh. Their wines reflect the vastness of the South African landscape and reflect the decades of vines growing in one place, in the unyielding sun, the cold winter rain, the storms and winds, on a mountain, on a plain somewhere which produces these delicate but powerful wines.

Breedekloof lies in the Breede River Valley between the Slanghoek/Du Toitskloof and Hex River mountains. It’s a distinctly Mediterranean zone: cold, wet winters (often with snow on the surrounding peaks) and warm, sunny summers, with marked day–night temperature swings that slow ripening and help retain acidity. Harvest here typically runs later than in many Cape districts, contributing to freshness and poise.

Vineyards range from the valley floor to the lower mountain slopes. Geology and soils are diverse: alluvial sands and loams over river stones along the Breede, grading to stony, sandstone-derived and shale-influenced parcels on the fans and foothills. A major geological feature—the Worcester Fault—threads the valley, further mixing soil types and drainage profiles. This mosaic underpins a wide stylistic spectrum.

Chenin Blanc is the district’s calling card and most planted variety, joined by Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay; Colombard remains important in volume. Reds lean on Pinotage, Shiraz/Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot in support. Still wines dominate, though small volumes of Cap Classique and dessert/fortified styles also appear

Muscat of Alexandria is one of the oldest known grape varieties, believed to have originated in North Africa, likely in Egypt, and named after the ancient port city of Alexandria. Part of the wider Muscat family, it is prized for its aromatic, floral character and is thought to be a natural cross between Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and a table grape.

Viticulturally, it is a vigorous, high-yielding vine with large, loosely packed golden-green berries and thick skins. It thrives in warm to hot climates, requiring long, sunny growing seasons to achieve full ripeness. The variety is tolerant of drought but can be susceptible to fungal diseases in humid conditions.

Today, Muscat of Alexandria is widely planted around the Mediterranean (Spain, Italy, Greece), in North Africa, South Africa, Australia, and parts of South America. In Spain, it is called Moscatel de Alejandría; in Italy, Zibibbo.

It is used for a range of styles—from fresh table grapes and raisins to lusciously sweet fortified and dessert wines. Typical flavours include orange blossom, rose, honey, apricot, and ripe grape, often with a musky perfume. In fortified or late-harvest styles, it can develop rich marmalade and dried fruit notes, making it a versatile grape with enduring global appeal.
