Château Puybarbe is in the heart of the appellation of “Côtes de Bourg”. Three parallel lines of hills, along the Gironde estuary (just opposite the Margaux appellation in Médoc) gave this wine region its nick name of “Small Switzerland of Bordeaux”. The estate Chateau Puybarbe is located on the highest point of the third ridge line and offers a unique panorama that extends to Bordeaux embracing the whole Bourg area.

Côtes de Bourg is an historic wine region located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, just north of Bordeaux city. Sheltered by the estuary and gently undulating hills, the vineyards benefit from a temperate maritime climate with mild winters, warm summers and a long growing season. The proximity to the river moderates temperatures and reduces the risk of frost, although heavy rainfall and humidity can increase pressure from mildew and rot, especially in wet vintages.

The soils of Côtes de Bourg are some of the oldest and most varied in Bordeaux, ranging from limestone and clay to gravel and red sand rich in iron (known locally as “boulbènes”). These diverse soils allow different grape varieties to express themselves fully and contribute to the region’s rich, structured style.

Merlot dominates plantings, well suited to the clay-based soils, followed by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Malbec, which performs particularly well here. The wines are typically medium- to full-bodied, with deep colour and flavours of black cherry, plum and blackberry, often accompanied by notes of violet, graphite and warm spice. Flavour profiles typically include blackcurrant (cassis), blackberry, mint, cedar, and tobacco, often developing notes of leather, earth, and spice with age. Malbec is a dark-skinned grape variety originally from southwestern France, particularly Cahors, where it was historically known as “Côt.” Once widely grown throughout Bordeaux as a blending grape, its plantings in France declined due to susceptibility to frost, coulure, and disease. However, Malbec found a new home in Argentina, where it has become the country’s flagship variety.

Viticulturally, Malbec thrives in warm, sunny climates with significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps develop rich fruit flavours while preserving acidity. The grape is vigorous, with large berries and thin skins, making it prone to rot in humid conditions but capable of producing deeply coloured wines in dry environments.

Globally, Malbec is most famously planted in Argentina’s Mendoza region, where high-altitude vineyards produce intensely flavoured wines with smooth tannins. It is also cultivated in Cahors, Chile, the United States (notably California and Washington), Australia, and South Africa.
