Bründlmayer is one of Austria’s leading family estates, based in Langenlois in the Kamptal region and run by Willi Bründlmayer and his family.

Since the 1980s, the winery has played a major role in establishing Austria’s international reputation for precise, terroir-driven wines, with a strong emphasis on sustainable vineyard practices and careful winemaking.

Alongside its celebrated Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines, the estate also produces elegant rosé and red wines from traditional Austrian varieties such as Zweigelt.

Kamptal is one of Austria’s leading wine regions, located in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), just northwest of Vienna. Centred around the Kamp River, Kamptal is renowned for producing high-quality white wines, particularly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, which thrive in its diverse soils and unique microclimate.

The region experiences a distinctive climatic interplay between the cool air descending from the Waldviertel forest to the north and the warm Pannonian air from the east. This diurnal temperature variation is key to preserving acidity while promoting ripeness and aromatic complexity. The long, sunny autumns further enhance flavour development, especially for late-ripening varieties like Riesling.

Kamptal’s vineyards are planted on a mix of soils, including loess, granite, and primary rock, each contributing different nuances to the wines. The best sites are found on terraced slopes around towns like Langenlois, Zöbing, and Gobelsburg.

Grüner Veltliner is the region’s flagship grape, known for its freshness, peppery spice, and citrus notes. Riesling from Kamptal tends to be dry, mineral-driven, and long-lived, with purity and elegance. Though the focus is on whites, some red varieties like Zweigelt and Pinot Noir are also grown.

Kamptal is part of Austria’s DAC system, with "Kamptal DAC" reserved for wines meeting strict quality and typicity standards.

Zweigelt is Austria’s most widely planted red grape variety, created in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt through a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. Originally called Rotburger, it was renamed to honour its creator and has since become a flagship red for Austrian wine.

Viticulturally, Zweigelt is a relatively hardy and early-ripening variety, prized for its resistance to frost and reliable yields. It thrives in Austria’s temperate continental climate, particularly in regions like Burgenland and Niederösterreich, where warm days and cool nights help develop its vibrant fruit character while retaining freshness.

Zweigelt is also grown, albeit on a smaller scale, in countries such as Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Canada, and even parts of the United States and New Zealand, where cooler climates allow for similar quality expressions.

Stylistically, Zweigelt ranges from light and fruity to rich and age-worthy. In its youth, it often displays juicy red cherry, raspberry, and violet notes, with soft tannins and lively acidity. More serious examples, often oak-aged, can show darker fruit, spice, and earthy complexity.
