Bründlmayer is one of Austria’s most highly regarded family wineries, based in Langenlois in the Kamptal region and led by Willi Bründlmayer and his family.

Kamptal is one of Austria’s leading wine regions, located in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), just northwest of Vienna. Centred around the Kamp River, Kamptal is renowned for producing high-quality white wines, particularly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, which thrive in its diverse soils and unique microclimate.

The region experiences a distinctive climatic interplay between the cool air descending from the Waldviertel forest to the north and the warm Pannonian air from the east. This diurnal temperature variation is key to preserving acidity while promoting ripeness and aromatic complexity. The long, sunny autumns further enhance flavour development, especially for late-ripening varieties like Riesling.

Kamptal’s vineyards are planted on a mix of soils, including loess, granite, and primary rock, each contributing different nuances to the wines. The best sites are found on terraced slopes around towns like Langenlois, Zöbing, and Gobelsburg.

Grüner Veltliner is the region’s flagship grape, known for its freshness, peppery spice, and citrus notes. Riesling from Kamptal tends to be dry, mineral-driven, and long-lived, with purity and elegance. Though the focus is on whites, some red varieties like Zweigelt and Pinot Noir are also grown.

Kamptal is part of Austria’s DAC system, with "Kamptal DAC" reserved for wines meeting strict quality and typicity standards.

Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s flagship white grape variety, prized for its versatility, vibrant acidity, and distinctive flavour profile. Thought to have originated in Austria, it thrives particularly well in regions like Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal, where it benefits from a continental climate with warm days and cool nights, ideal for preserving acidity and aromatic freshness.

Viticulturally, Grüner Veltliner is a mid-ripening grape that performs well on a variety of soils, especially loess and primary rock. It tends to yield generously but requires careful vineyard management to achieve concentration and balance.

Outside Austria, it has found success in countries like Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and increasingly in New World regions such as New Zealand, Australia, and the United States—particularly in cooler sites like Oregon and California’s Sonoma Coast.

Grüner Veltliner is known for its food-friendly character and diverse styles. Young, fresh expressions display crisp acidity and flavours of green apple, lime, white pepper, and radish. More serious, age-worthy versions—often from top single vineyards—can be richer and more textured, showing stone fruit, spice, and a distinctive minerality.
