Bodega Colomé is one of Argentina’s oldest and most respected wineries, established in 1831 in the Calchaquí Valley of Salta and noted for its exceptionally high-altitude vineyards, including some planted above 3,000 metres, among the highest in the world.

Colomé’s modern era began after acquisition by Swiss entrepreneur Donald Hess in 2001, who invested in vineyards and community development, helping raise quality and international recognition.

The Estate Series reflects the winery’s commitment to approachable, terroir-driven wines that showcase Salta’s dramatic altitude and climatic advantages for aromatic whites and robust reds alike.

Salta is one of Argentina’s most distinctive wine regions, located in the far north-west of the country along the Andes Mountains. It is renowned for its extremely high-altitude vineyards, many planted between 1,500 and over 3,000 metres above sea level, among the highest in the world.

This elevation brings intense sunlight, cool nights and wide diurnal temperature ranges, which help grapes develop concentrated flavours while retaining fresh acidity. The region’s dry, desert-like climate and sandy, well-drained soils reduce disease pressure and support low-intervention viticulture.

Salta is especially famous for Torrontés, Argentina’s signature white grape, producing aromatic wines with floral and citrus notes. Red varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat also perform well, offering depth and structure. Key areas include the Calchaquí Valleys, notably Cafayate, where modern producers combine tradition and innovation to showcase Salta’s unique terroir.

Torrontés is Argentina’s signature white grape and one of the country’s most distinctive wine varieties. It is actually a family of related grapes, with Torrontés Riojano considered the highest quality and most widely planted.

Genetic studies show it is a natural cross between Muscat of Alexandria and the Criolla Chica grape, which explains its intensely aromatic profile. Torrontés wines are known for pronounced floral aromas such as rose petals, jasmine and orange blossom, often combined with citrus, peach and grape notes.

Despite the highly perfumed nose, the wines are typically dry, with refreshing acidity and a clean, crisp finish. Torrontés thrives in high-altitude regions such as Salta, where strong sunlight enhances aromatics while cool nights preserve freshness. It is generally best enjoyed young, offering vibrant, expressive character that pairs well with spicy cuisine, seafood and fresh salads.
