Antica Enotria has 12-hectares of vineyard just a few kilometres from the Gulf of Manfredonia. These have been cultivated organically since 1993. The older vineyards are trained to the traditional local Puglia pergola, while the younger plantings, put in less than ten years ago, are trained to the spurred cordon. The finest vines are the varieties indigenous to Puglia, the Nero di Troia, Primitivo, and Negroamaro, as well as varieties classic to areas bordering Daunia, such as Aglianico and Falanghina.

Puglia, located in the heel of Italy’s boot, is one of the country’s most prolific wine-producing regions. Known for its sun-drenched landscapes and ancient viticultural heritage, Puglia has traditionally focused on quantity, though quality has increased significantly in recent decades.

The region experiences a hot, dry Mediterranean climate, with long summers and minimal rainfall – ideal for ripening grapes to full maturity. Coastal breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian Seas help moderate the heat, while the inland areas experience more extreme temperatures. Drought can be a challenge, but the region's native grape varieties are well-adapted to these conditions.

Puglia is divided into several key wine areas, including Salento in the south, known for robust reds, and Castel del Monte in the north, which has seen growing recognition for its quality wines.

The region is best known for red grape varieties. Primitivo, genetically linked to Zinfandel, produces bold, fruit-forward wines with high alcohol. Negroamaro is another key variety, offering darker, earthier reds, often used in blends. Nero di Troia and Malvasia Nera also feature prominently. While reds dominate, white grapes like Verdeca, Bombino Bianco, and Fiano are increasingly being cultivated.

Puglia continues to grow in popularity for offering expressive, approachable wines with a strong sense of place and great value.

Fiano is an ancient white grape variety originating in southern Italy, most famously associated with the Campania region, particularly the DOCG of Fiano di Avellino. Believed to have been cultivated since Roman times, Fiano thrives in the volcanic soils and warm Mediterranean climate of southern Italy, where it produces naturally low yields and small, thick-skinned berries. This combination results in concentrated flavours and a distinctive texture.

Viticulturally, Fiano is relatively hardy, with good resistance to disease, though its small bunches can make it less commercially productive. It ripens relatively late, maintaining acidity well even in hot conditions, which contributes to its ability to age gracefully.

While Campania remains the heartland, plantings have expanded to other Italian regions such as Sicily and Puglia. In recent decades, Australia—especially McLaren Vale and the Riverland—has embraced Fiano for its drought tolerance and suitability to warm climates. Small plantings can also be found in the United States and South America.

Fiano wines are typically medium- to full-bodied, with aromas of pear, melon, and citrus, often layered with hazelnut, honey, and floral notes. Texture is a hallmark, giving the wine weight and creaminess. Styles range from fresh, unoaked expressions to richer, barrel-aged versions capable of developing complexity with bottle age.

Falanghina is an ancient white grape variety native to southern Italy, particularly the Campania region. It has seen a revival in recent decades and is now one of the most important white grapes in southern Italian winemaking. Believed to have been cultivated since Roman times, Falanghina thrives in Campania’s volcanic soils, especially in areas such as Benevento, Sannio, and the slopes around Mount Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei.

The grape performs well in Campania’s Mediterranean climate, which features hot, dry summers and mild winters. Its thick skins help it resist disease and sunburn, although it can be prone to uneven ripening and requires careful canopy management to ensure balance and freshness.

Falanghina typically produces crisp, medium-bodied wines with lively acidity. Its aromatic profile includes citrus fruits like lemon and tangerine, green apple, pear, and often floral or herbal notes, such as orange blossom and sage. Wines from volcanic soils can also exhibit a distinctive mineral or saline edge. While most often vinified in a fresh, unoaked style, some examples see lees ageing or oak treatment for added texture and complexity.

Falanghina is gaining international recognition for its vibrant, food-friendly character and its expression of southern Italy’s unique terroir.
