Bodega Sottano is the result of a family tradition that has been enriched and maintained over several generations. The winery essentially strives to unite hard work and new technologies to preserve the gifts of nature and showcase them in their wines. Taking care of every detail ensures the desired outcome. One of the pioneers in the Cuyo region’s viticulture industry was Fioravante Sottano. Arriving from Italy in 1890, he settled in Mendoza.

Nowadays, the winery is owned by the fourth generation of his family. Since 1998, his grandson Ricardo Sottano and his great-grandsons Diego, Pablo, and Mauricio have been carrying on his legacy in order to produce premium wines.

Mendoza is Argentina’s most important and renowned wine region, responsible for around 70% of the country’s wine production. Situated on the eastern side of the Andes, Mendoza benefits from a unique combination of altitude, sunlight, and dry conditions, making it ideal for viticulture.

The region’s high elevation – ranging from 600 to over 1,500 metres above sea level – moderates the hot, sunny climate, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity. The Andes play a crucial role, providing irrigation through meltwater and shielding the area from Pacific weather systems. The semi-arid climate offers over 300 days of sunshine per year with minimal rainfall, reducing the risk of disease and allowing for precise vineyard management.

Mendoza is divided into several key sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo, Maipú, and the Uco Valley. Each has distinct terroirs influenced by altitude and soil composition. The Uco Valley, for example, is prized for its cooler climate and limestone-rich soils, producing elegant, high-quality wines.

Malbec is Mendoza’s flagship grape, celebrated for its deep colour, rich fruit, and velvety tannins. Other prominent varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Syrah, and increasingly, white grapes such as Chardonnay, Torrontés, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most widely planted and celebrated red grape varieties, known for its deep colour, firm tannins, and remarkable ageing potential. Originating in Bordeaux, France, as a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it has become a global benchmark for structured, full-bodied red wines.

Viticulturally, Cabernet Sauvignon is a hardy, late-ripening grape that thrives in warm, sunny climates. It produces small, thick-skinned berries, contributing to its bold tannic structure and deep colour. The vine is relatively resistant to disease and adapts well to diverse soils, making it suitable for a wide range of terroirs.

Today, Cabernet Sauvignon is planted extensively across the world—from its French homeland in Bordeaux’s Left Bank, to California’s Napa Valley, Chile’s Maipo Valley, Australia’s Coonawarra, and South Africa’s Stellenbosch. It often forms the backbone of blends, particularly in Bordeaux-style wines, but also shines as a varietal expression.

Flavour profiles typically include blackcurrant (cassis), blackberry, mint, cedar, and tobacco, often developing notes of leather, earth, and spice with age. Styles range from fruit-forward and plush in warmer climates to structured and herbal in cooler ones. Cabernet Sauvignon’s power, elegance, and longevity make it a cornerstone of fine red winemaking worldwide.
