Leeuwin Estate Art Series Riesling

Top quality Riesling from one of Western Australia’s most famous estates.

Leeuwin Estate consistently produces wines that rank with many of the world’s finest. Under the direction of two generations of the founding family, who work alongside a dedicated team of winemakers to maintain the high levels of quality that are synonymous with the Leeuwin Estate. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal to produce premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan in the transformation of their cattle farm into Leeuwin Estate. Enjoying its first commercial vintage in 1979, Leeuwin was thrust into the international spotlight.

The grapes were picked in the cool of the night by machine and immediately pressed. The juice was floated immediately and then bottom racked off gross lees. The juice was warmed and inoculated with pure yeast cultures and fermented in stainless steel tanks between twelve to thirteen degrees for 2 weeks. After fermentation, the best individual parcels were assembled, then stirred, fined, stabilised and bottled.

The wine is incredibly vibrant and expressive on the nose with layers of lemon flesh, lime juice, apples and grapefruit at the forefront. With elevated and lifted notes of lemon myrtle, sweet jasmine, kaffir lime leaf, coriander seed and sea spray promote the purity and clarity. Lively and concentrated palate with focus and finesse. Cut lime and lemon zest meet with minerality and a tightly coiled acid structure. A saline thread is evident throughout with delicate and textural layers towards the crisp and talc-like finish.

Riesling

Riesling

Riesling is an aromatic white grape variety that is grown across the world and the wines are produced in a variety of styles. With its naturally high acidity and susceptibility to botrytis/noble rot, wines range from bone-dry to incredibly sweet.

The fruit flavours in the wine vary according to the level of ripeness in the grapes at the time of harvest. Just-ripe grapes produce wines with green apples and citrus, then the riper you go, the more stone fruit and tropical flavours you get. Besides fruit, you’ll often smell things like honeycomb, jasmine, or lime peel, along with a striking aroma that smells similar to petrol.

Germany is the world’s most important producer of Riesling, with exceptional examples from the Mosel, Rheingau and Pfalz regions. Rieslings from Alsace (France) are typically dry with pronounced aroma and flavour intensity. South Australia’s Eden Valley and Clare Valley produce dry Rieslings with notes of lime and petrol.
