A delicious, full-bodied Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. With minimal oak influence the wine is all about the grape, showcasing peach and citrus flavours so typical of Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. Brilliant value Chardonnay from Hawkes Bay in the north island of New Zealand.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from vineyard sites around the Hawkes Bay. Vineyards in the north at Bay View provide the finished wine with ripe tropical fruit flavours while sites on the terraces above the Tutaekuri River at Puketapu add a flintier, grapefruit note.

These sites also provide a natural acidity to the blended wine. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking, and bunch thinning are all practiced in these vineyards in the pursuit of quality.

The individual vineyard parcels were harvested separately in early March and fermented in both tank (55%) and French oak barriques. A small percentage was allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to soften the wine and add richness and complexity. The finished wines were left on their yeast lees with regular stirring until blending.

The Grape - Chardonnay

The world's most planted white grape variety, Chardonnay is prized for its ability to produce outstanding-quality wines in cool, moderate and warm climates. It is most often used as a single variety in still wines but is equally successful when used in sparkling.

The flavours of Chardonnay are many and varied; they're very much affected by where the grapes are grown, the winemaking process and maturation. 

In cool-climates, such as northern France and England, you would expect flavours of orchard fruits like apples and pears, citrus and wet stones. However, in warm-climates (California, Australia) you'd get peachy flavours, tropical fruits, and sometimes even banana. 

It is common to taste other flavours in Chardonnay, for instance fermenting or ageing in oak gives the wine flavours of vanilla, smoke and toast; the process of malolactic conversion can add creamy, buttery flavours; lees ageing adds body as well as biscuit notes.

Under winemaker Gordon Russell, Esk Valley produce a collection of wines that are regarded amongst New Zealand's finest. They source grapes from two of New Zealand’s most famous wine regions - Hawke's Bay and Marlborough.

Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of the North Island, has a warm maritime climate and gravel based soils that are ideal for the production of high quality reds and fuller white wines. It is from Hawke's Bay that Esk Valley sources its Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris.

Marlborough, at the northern tip of the South Island, is renowned the world over for its unique style of Sauvignon Blanc. With much cooler nights, Marlborough produces wines with a freshness and intensity of flavour that is rare in the wine world. This is the source of Esk Valley’s Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir.
