Distant Noises Cabernet Sauvignon

Elegant, cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon.

We're always on the lookout for value, no matter what the price point is. Distant Noises is the perfect example of that. In his day job as winemaker at Yabby Lake, Tom Carson is known for producing some of the best Pinot Noirs in all of Australia.

On the side, he produces this range delicious, serious wines from the Yarra Valley. Like Tom's Syrah, the cooler climate in the Yarra is helping him to make a much more balanced, refreshing style of wine, It features the classic hallmarks of Cabernet Sauvignon; blackberries, blackcurrant on the nose and palate with aromas of blackcurrant intermingling with wood notes and cedar on the nose. with a deliciously sappy note to balance the sweet black fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is supremely drinkable at a refreshingly restrained 13% alcohol.

This Aussie Cabernet makes for a great New-world alternative to more traditional Bordeaux style reds. The cooler climate helps it to retain a wonderful acidity that pairs well with those more brooding style fruit flavours cabernet can evoke, without it becoming too overpowering.

Distant Noises

The Winemaker

Distant Noises

Often referred to as 'Mr Pinot', winemaker Tom Carson has achieved a lot in the world of wine with Australia's Yabby Lake, however he's recently launched his own special project, Distant Noises.

In his eyes, he has achieved many of his goals at the premium end of Mornington Peninsula wine-making and therefore relished the opportunity to create more accessible and affordable wines whilst highlighting the cool-climate potential that the region has to offer.

The fruit for this range is hand-harvested from the valley around Yarra Glen and, despite the price, there's no compromise on quality - Carson uses premium oak barrels from Tonnellerie de Mercurey in Burgundy to age the wine.

Mornington Peninsula, Australia

Mornington Peninsula, Australia

Australia's Mornington Peninsula is just over an hour from Melbourne. It’s surrounded by three bodies of water and ripples with ridges and hills from volcanic activity 60 million years ago. It's said that no vineyard is greater than 7km from the sea in Mornington.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate this wine region but you'll also find some wonderfully expressive examples of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Gris.

With its maritime climate and southern location, the Mornington Peninsula is cooler than most other parts of Australia. There’s often wind and rain during the grape-growing summer months of November and December, which creates perfect conditions for the region’s signature varieties.

Yarra Valley, Australia

Yarra Valley, Australia

Just east of Melbourne, in Victoria, is the wine region of Yarra Valley. It is arguably known as the greatest cool-climate region in Australia, in addition to being one of the largest.

There are two distinct subregions, the Valley Floor and the Upper Yarra, each with different altitudes, soils, rainfall and climates, producing very different wines.

The Valley Floor includes the towns of Lilydale, Yarra Glen and Healesville, and is generally warmer with grey, sandy loam soils. The Upper Yarra extends across most of the southern side of the valley; its fertile red volcanic soils coupled with a cooler climate (owing to its increased elevation) produces the area's most notable varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Many other varieties are grown here. Elegant and ethereal Cabernet Sauvignons reminiscent of Bordeaux are thoughtfully raised, consciously made, and carefully cellared. Riesling is also gaining ground, with styles ranging from dry to sweet and some producers are playing with skin-contact to create textural, age-worthy wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most well-known grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon makes some of the world's finest red wines, whether on its own or blended with other varieties. Surprisingly, it is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux, France.

Cabernet Sauvignon is loved for its high concentration and age worthiness. The intense flavour and high tannin content make it the perfect partner to rich grilled meats, peppery sauces, and dishes with bold flavours.

Old World Cabernet Sauvignons, aka your classic French Bordeaux bottles, tend to have a brooding character, with robust tannins adding structure and blackcurrant fruit shining through. In the New World - California and the southern hemisphere (Chile, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia) - Cabernets tend to develop a sense of fullness and weight. Rich in blackcurrant, mint and occasionally green bell pepper flavours along with firm tannins.
