Bodega Bideona Las Parcelas Tinto

An old vine Rioja that's bursting with flavour.

Las Parcelas Tinto displays an amazingly complex and fruity profile. The fruit used come from vines that have an average age of 50, this leads to a unique and remarkable Rioja.

Made from the highest quality, hand selected Viura, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca, and other grapes from small, old, hilltop vineyard parcels (parcelas) on limestone soils. About a third of the wine is fermented in semi-new oak barrels of top-quality French oak, for added texture and complexity, but without overt oak character.

Pure and intense primary aromas of dark cherries and black berries with a hint of violet and cloves. Medium-bodied, with remarkable complexity and fruit concentration. The quality of the fruit shines through, showing the typical character of the cooler climate of Rioja Alavesa, without being masked by excessive oak ageing. The intensity of the fruit is balanced by acidity, fine tannins and a long, mineral finish.

Tempranillo

Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain’s most prized black grape variety and is a key component of many of the country’s most famous red wines. It’s also grown in Portugal, where it’s called Tinta Roriz, and is a major blending grape used in Port. Outside of Spain and Portugal, Tempranillo is hard to find, but it is planted sparsely in Argentina, Southern France, Australia, the United States and Mexico.

Wines made from Tempranillo typically have red and black fruit flavours (strawberry, cherry, blackberry, plum) and can range from simple and fruity to complex and age-worthy. Well-crafted Tempranillo can age for two or more decades.

It’s traditional to mature Tempranillo wines in new-oak, imparting flavours of vanilla, smoke and cedar. It is also common for winemakers to age their wines in-bottle before release. Excellent examples can develop flavours of mushroom, leather and dried fruit.

The most well-known Tempranillo-based wines come from the region of Rioja, north-east Spain, and further inland in the mountainous Ribera del Duero region.

Rioja Classification

Rioja Classification

There are four labelling terms that are used to reflect the style and quality of wines throughout Rioja DOCa, reflecting the legal minimum ageing criteria.

Joven/Genérico: Young and fruity, with no minimum ageing requirements, typically released in the year following the vintage. You don’t often see Joven on labels today, simply labelling the wine Rioja is much more commonplace.

Crianza: Must be aged in oak barrels prior to release. Crianza wines have fresh fruit flavours laced with vanilla and hints of spice.

Reserva: Aged for extended periods of time before release, both in oak and in-bottle. Reserva wines are more structured and fuller-bodied. Fresh fruit flavours become cooked and spices become more pronounced.

Gran Reserva: Only made in exceptional years and comprised of grapes from the very best vineyards, Gran Reserva wines are subject to the highest minimum ageing requirements. Elegant and complex, the reds have rich dried fruit flavours and notes of leather.
