Simpsons Gravel Castle Chardonnay
Impressive unoaked English Chardonnay.
With climate change kicking in, we're finding more and more English still wines of character and this Kentish Chardonnay is no different. England has traditionally grown specific clones of Chardonnay suited to sparkling wine production, which ripen a little earlier. As if to prove that climate change is making northerly regions warmer, Simpsons also grow still wine clones from Burgundy on their vineyards near Canterbury, which go to make this wine. If the weather in Chablis continues to warm, or become even more unpredictable, expect to see English popping up in its place. This is unoaked, bright and steely. To paraphrase Peter Richards MW recently, 'like Chablis was twenty years ago...'
