Ricca Terra Bullets Before Cannonballs
A taste of the Med in South Australia.
Ricca Terra was founded in 2003 by Ashley and Holly Ratcliff with a vision to discover which grape varieties truly suit Australia's dry and warm climate. They quickly found that the native grapes of southern Europe and the Mediterranean, such as Nero d'Avola, Tempranillo and Vermentino, would produce much more uniquely Australian wines than those that had been planted to emulate the great wines of France. The name 'Bullets Before Cannonballs' refers to their practice of planting smaller plots of these new grapes before expanding their production, mythologically in the same way that sailors would fire bullets at enemy ships to assess trajectory before firing their cannonballs. Based on this wine, we think we'll be seeing a lot more of these wines in the future...
None of this is to say that Aussie Shiraz and Chardonnay is going anywhere anytime soon, but we do strongly believe in the talents of this newer generation of Australian winemakers who are challenging common preconceptions. You can read more about the Australian new-wave in our blog post here.
