Still, perhaps we can coax the sunshine back with the right glass in hand.

When it comes to wines for long, light summer evenings, it is only natural to reach for the familiar favourites: crisp whites and pale rosés. They are classics for a reason. But there is plenty of pleasure to be found a little further along the colour spectrum. So allow us to introduce you to the darker side of summer drinking: darker rosés and chilled, lighter-bodied reds.

Chilled reds have become increasingly popular in recent years, as more drinkers discover that some wines truly shine when served a touch cooler. Bringing the temperature down a few degrees from traditional “room temperature” can lift the fruit, sharpen the acidity, and create a fresher, more mouth-watering style — exactly what you want when the sun is beating down.

Darker-hued rosés, meanwhile, still spend more time on the shelves than they deserve. Much of this comes from the misconception that deeper colour means greater sweetness. In reality, the opposite is often true, with many darker rosés offering dry, complex, food-friendly flavours and a depth of aroma that their paler counterparts cannot always match.

Not convinced?
