Raul Perez is without doubt one of the most important names in Spanish winemaking. Having left his family winery, Castro Ventosa in Bierzo (though he still consults), he now makes wines with a variety of partners, protégés and friends across the north west of Spain. La Vizcaina is one of his primary projects, with Cesar Marquez, in his home region of Bierzo with El Rapalao, primarily Mencia with a dash of Bastardo and Alicante Bouschet, named after the vineyard in the village of Valtuille de Abajo the wine comes from. This is higher altitude Bierzo, as he sees it, the future of the region. The altitude slows ripening and helps give the wines a fresh acidity that inevitably reminds you of the wines of Burgundy. A really beautiful wine.
