Kumeu River Estate Hunting Hill Chardonnay
Outstanding, Cru quality Chardonnay from Auckland.
The Brajkovich family's Kumeu River estate in Auckland at the very north of New Zealand's north island has grown considerably over the years, and now enjoys a fine reputation in an area that isn't normally renowned for its wines. The heat that naturally comes with being so much further north (in the southern hemisphere) is vastly tempered by the region's proximity to water on three sides, resulting in surprisingly lithe wines with bright acidity.
Ever since Michael Brajkovich returned from a vintage in Burgundy in 1983, the Chardonnay grape's spiritual home, it has been clear that the area is perfectly suited to producing textural yet balanced wines in this style. And so, here we have the Hunting Hill Chardonnay, tasting like Puligny Montrachet at half the price. The vines are right next to the winery in the town of Kumeu, with the Kumeu river itself running alongside, and have remarkable concentration given that they are only just coming up to twenty years old now, having been replanted in 2000. We think this is just brilliant.
