Gusbourne Guinevere Chardonnay
The best still wine in England?
English still wine has an exciting future ahead, based on the quality we've tasted recently. This Chardonnay from Gusbourne's Kentish vines has been aged for 9 months in oak and on blind tasting has you guessing which part of Burgundy it has come from. At first, we might have tried to label it as Chablis acidity, Chassagne-Montrachet mealiness, Meursault butteriness, but after the second tasting, this time at the winery, it revealed itself through its pure fruit and precise acidity. It is not Burgundy, it is English.
That England's wines are developing an identity in such a way, and that this Chardonnay might be leading the way for its still wines, we hope is taken as the compliment it is intended to be.
