Charlie Herring Spotswood Shiraz
Meaty, powerful red from cult English winemaker.
Tim Phillips is the winemaker, who worked in the oil industry before he got into wine. He now makes very limited amounts of wine from a small walled garden in Hampshire, where he grows Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. We visited him in 2021 and after tasting his English wines and ciders, he showed us the first wine he made after studying winemaking in Stellenbosch, this Shiraz from the Spotswood vineyard he helped plant for the owner in 2006. He only has a small amount left but we loved it and he let us have some. Powerful, really well made (you’d never guess the alcohol from tasting it) and drinking really well eleven years on.
